The word Tantra stems from Sanskrit roots which literally translates as web or warp (as in weaving) – within each individual – the conscious-unconscious, male-female, in breath – outbreath .
Tantrica, Tantra or Sacred Tantric Practice, in its purest form, describes both the process and methodologies for the resolution of all conflicts of opposites.
From earliest times, the symbology used has been based on the interpenetration of what is, metaphorically, referred to as male – female. In modern terms, it is the search for non-duality.
This is the source of the corruption of the teachings because, if you read further, the metaphor covers the concept (in evolution) of the conjugate metamorphosis of Ishtar-Tamuz (Babylonian), Prajna-Vajra (Buddhist), Sophia Christos (Christianity), Isis Osiris (Egyptian), Shekinah – Ruach (Kaballistic).
The origins of Sacred Tantric practice and doctrine can be traced back at least to the “Indus Valley” civilization that was contemporary with the Sumerian and the beginnings of the Egyptian Old kingdom. The records and doctrines and practices found in archaeological digs finds parallels in ancient Hittite worship.
Tantrica: Popular Tantra
Tantra, as currently and popularly defined and interpreted within the concept of sacred sexual practices can be considered as a defilement of the essence of Tantra. There are quite a few “New Age” self-styled “guru’s” who have read some books (translated by some other self-styled guru) .. and so it goes on. This is a common occurrence within all Spirituality and Religion, (which may or may not be deliberate).
It can be shown that anyone who translates anything from one language to another with a purpose or intent will “flavor the translation” with their own preconceptions based on their own learned beliefs. There are, however, versions of most Tantric Texts available which have been translated into English by scholars whose native tongue was the language in which the text were originally written.
Tantric Textbooks can make very difficult reading for anyone who is not prepared to come from a position of “heart” and, because they are so often written in metaphor cannot be learnt. They can only be “ingested” or experienced as an “expression of consciousness” when there is an understanding of the use of metaphor within the culture of the original texts. However, the parallels are there and the metaphors can be seen by those prepared to shift their perception to a “heart” focus – as within many of the Bible stories, and especially the Chinese Philosophy of the Tao.
Tibetan Tantra Yoga
As with within all forms of religion and spirituality there appears, even within Tibetan spirituality a sectarian division where the expression of the same metaphor is given a different “slant” within the realms of language and “tribal custom”, resulting, to the uninformed observer, in apparent conflict. However, there are available original Manuscripts in the cursive script of the original authors.
Two of the primary commentators from the Tibetan school are considered by some to be the Jetsun Milarepa (1040-1143AD) and Tsong Khapa (b1355AD) of the bka’-brgyud sect founded about 1100 C.E.
Because of the relative inaccessibility of the Tibetan Tantric texts and the fact that they were maintained within a monastic library environment and were not regularly copied, I feel that the written expression remains closer to what was originally spoken by the originators.
The Essence of Tantric Practice
Tibetan Tantra treads a path of Love-Will-Wisdom and sees Heart, Hand and Head harmoniously joined, with “heart” (or love) as the “Light of the World Within” – ruler of the other two so that love-will does not deteriorate into self-will. The core understanding is perhaps “The only limit to the human mind is what we believe in”
This is the true Tantra, a joining of the vajra-power of love with the skilful means that acts like a fruitful womb to make the intent and the inmost spirit or that love manifest in the Vital Sea of the Blood of Life.
Tibetan Tantra is the language of both/and rather than either/or and says that this ” Divine Lineage” lies within us and we must simply desire to realize it enough to put it first in our value systems and then allow it to germinate and blossom
Pure Tantra provides ritual or practice, done for the practice not the intent, to focus the intellect.
Sexual Tantra is a corruption of the pure practice of Tantra as a metamorphosis of conjugates. The practice of Sexual Tantra as an approach to Yoga can have the opposite effect to pure Tantra, because the expression of the Life-force seeks Union (Yoga) with a separate partner rather than the Union of The Male and Female Essences within the individual.
